TELF AG analyzes the importance of Battery Energy Storage Systems

The new horizons of sustainability

The year that has just begun could represent a very important phase for the growth of companies that produce technological solutions for sustainability, and not only due to the global emphasis that continues to be placed on this topic. Governments and international institutions are introducing specific forms of public support for all specialists in green technologies: examples are the Inflation Reduction Act of the USA or the Net Zero Industry Act of the European Union, which have already demonstrated be able to concretely support those involved in the production of ecological technologies or those linked to the incredible process of the green transition.

Among the most interesting technologies, we must include battery energy storage systems, which, according to many observers, will be very important in the years of the energy transition. These are systems such as the BESS, Battery Energy Storage System, which have already attracted the attention of several international players in the energy sector (and will probably continue to do so in the future).

The role of the BESS in the global ecological transition

These special electrochemical devices convert electrical energy into chemical energy and vice versa. Their operation is linked to particular batteries that can be charged and discharged more than once, and for the creation of which a raw material of great importance, such as lithium, is also used (in particular for its energy density, but also the performance quality).

These batteries, specifically, serve the system to fuel its ability to store energy and make it usable at a later time, depending on specific needs. One of the most interesting aspects is certainly represented by the fact that the batteries can be charged through the excess energy generated by wind and photovoltaic systems but also through a connection to the grid, particularly in periods in which demand is low. These systems are also able to exploit artificial intelligence, using software to determine when the appropriate time is to release stored energy.

Like all other types of energy storage, Bess systems also respond to concrete and well-defined needs: we are talking above all about the ability to adequately respond to the demand for renewable energy, solar, and wind while providing a safe and effective solution to the natural discontinuity that characterizes energy supplies deriving from the sun or the wind. Also, for these reasons, Bess systems now appear to be increasingly widespread within residential, commercial, and industrial contexts, proving particularly useful as a means of supporting distribution networks and representing one of the technologies with the widest margins for growth in the sustainable energy sector.

According to some estimates from ReportLinker, the value of BESS technology based on lithium batteries could grow by 25% per year until 2025, exceeding 12 billion dollars. This is a quadruple figure compared to 2020. A few days ago, in the Italian newspaper Sole24Ore, the CEO of Sosteneo Sgr, Umberto Tamburrino, stated that storage systems such as BESS represent the backbone of the energy transition.
