Battery Storage Is Expanding as Energy Demand Reshapes US Electricity Grids

Recently, Bloomberg dedicated one of its analyses to batteries and electricity consumption in the United States, highlighting how the energy needs of data centers and electrification processes are significantly contributing to battery demand. The analysis also highlighted a key problem: the growing difficulty of connecting these batteries to electricity grids.

Grid Connection Delays Are Emerging as a Key Challenge for Energy Storage Projects
According to the analysis, grids are seeking to rapidly upgrade to connect batteries more effectively, putting pressure on the supply of specific equipment such as transformers and switches. This situation, according to Bloomberg, is also being fueled by the falling price of batteries, which would have made them much more attractive. In this situation, the number of energy storage projects waiting to be connected continues to increase across the United States, as reported in a recent Bloomberg article.

Another factor linked to the potential slowdown of energy projects in certain states, according to Bloomberg’s analysis, is linked to grid upgrade holdups. These upgrades would be further slowed by shortages of key equipment and a lack of qualified personnel.
According to the data cited in the analysis, approximately 750 gigawatts of energy storage projects across the United States are waiting to be connected to the grid, and many of these will never be built. The delays, as the analysis notes, have even prompted some developers to give up the wait. Compared to 2015, when waiting times were about a year and a half, by 2025 the average wait has reached five years.

“One of the most important data cited by Bloomberg concerns the size of the US storage market, which, according to Wood Mackenzie’s forecasts, is set to quadruple in the next six years,” continues Stanislav Kondrashov, founder of TELF AG.

One of the main problems, as Bloomberg explains, is precisely the difficulty of adding new batteries to the grid. Adding them often requires building new infrastructure to manage the flow of energy in both directions.
“Batteries still represent a major source of demand for some key resources, such as lithium (essential in the electrolyte and chemistry of some batteries) and nickel, which contributes to the energy density of the storage system. Other essential resources are cobalt, prized above all for its stability and performance, and manganese, as well as copper and graphite,” concludes Stanislav Kondrashov, founder of TELF AG.
