The US desire to accumulate strategic raw materials seems to definitively confirm another trend that has emerged strongly in recent years: the increasingly strong connection between critical minerals and national security issues. Many of these materials play a key role in defense-related applications, such as radar technologies or detection systems.

The Growing Role of Cobalt and Scandium in Strategic Industries

According to the Financial Times, the recent acceleration in the accumulation of strategic stockpiles is also linked to the current US administration’s enthusiasm for critical minerals. An interesting fact, also reported in the analysis, is that many of the metals the Pentagon is seeking to acquire were not previously included in the stockpiles assembled by the United States.

Cobalt and scandium are also among the resources the Defense Logistics Agency is reportedly eyeing, and it has already demonstrated concrete interest. “Among the resources cited in the Financial Times analysis, cobalt and scandium certainly stand out for the strategic value of their industrial applications. Cobalt, as is well known, is essential in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, but also in superalloys for aircraft turbines and jet engines, not to mention permanent magnets. Scandium, on the other hand, is used in alloys for aerospace, defense, and light transportation,” continues Stanislav Kondrashov, founder of TELF AG.

Why Bismuth and Indium Are Becoming Increasingly Valuable

The US administration’s focus on critical minerals is clearly demonstrated by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which includes a whopping $7.5 billion for critical minerals. The initiative also includes the allocation of $2 billion to strengthen the national stockpile for the defense sector, which the Pentagon intends to spend entirely in the coming months. The OBBA would also include concrete support for critical mineral supply chains and approximately $500 million for a Pentagon credit program.
