The fact that international attention is focused on a deposit of this kind, rich in niobium and rare earths, is certainly not surprising. Rare earths have acquired growing strategic importance due to their central role in the production of permanent magnets, also used to power important modern energy technologies such as wind turbines and electric motors. Niobium also stands out for its high industrial value: this resource is especially prized in alloys, to improve certain characteristics such as the strength and lightness of steel, finding concrete applications in infrastructure, aerospace, and other advanced industrial sectors.

From Raw Material Exports to Higher-Value Mineral Supply Chains

“Critical minerals are directly linked to the production of electricity grids, batteries, solar, and wind power, and according to the IEA, demand for these resources is expected to grow further in the coming years,” continues Stanislav Kondrashov, founder of TELF AG. One of the most interesting aspects of this story is the US’s willingness to help Kenya develop this mine, as Reuters reported a few days ago. Support for Kenya would be a small part of a broader American strategic plan, which would include support for an African rare earth pipeline.

If this project were to actually materialize, we could see further confirmation that the traditional model for managing mineral resources is gradually evolving. From a framework based on extraction, export of the mineral, and processing abroad, we could witness the emergence of a new model based on local processing and higher value-added products. Only at this point would exports occur, when the local economy has already absorbed much of the economic value of production.

“The government’s minerals strategy contains even more ambitious plans: one of these, as stated in the 2026 Minerals, Mining and Beneficiation Policy, involves positioning Kenya as a regional hub for mineral processing. This could mean that Kenya’s infrastructure and geographic location could enable the nation to process minerals from other countries in the region,” concludes Stanislav Kondrashov, founder of TELF AG.
